Why is the so-called Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) bad?

The ERA has many ramifications in practice, and they are not good for women:

  • Abortion would become a right permanently enshrined into the Constitution under the ERA, and taxpayers would be forced to pay for them.  Basically, it would lock a super-powered Roe vs Wade into the US Constitution and overturn all state laws which restrict or regulate or ban abortions.
  • ERA would create a sex-neutral society and erase the benefits women receive.
  • Compel women/girls to compete against men/boys in sports
  • Abolish female privacy in prisons, locker rooms, women’s shelters, nursing homes, hospitals
  • Subject women to the military draft and front-line ground combat
  • End all incentives for women-owned businesses
  • End female scholarships
  • End women-only sports programs
  • The amendment would grossly expand the power of the federal government.
  • Additionally, federal constitutional amendments are not proper matters to be promoted by local county governments.

Leading conservative constitutional experts on the ERA:

“So, I think in both the abortion area and in the LGBT arena, the ERA Amendment would be a direct assault on religious liberty, against religious organizations and churches.”  –Mat Staver, Attorney and Founder of Liberty Counsel

“There’s no question that the ERA would bolster the claims of Roe v. Wade and “the LGBT agenda – including the most radical transgender claims.” Mike Farris, Alliance Defending Freedom

“If you love abortions and want to increase the power of government to force taxpayers to pay for them, then you will love the ERA. The ERA is bad.  Very bad…”  John Stemberger, President & General Counsel, Florida Family Policy Council
